Waves: why the HUD shows colours the board is full of

The containers are not a palette. They are an order of work, and the order arrives three screws at a time.

The board collapsing after the red container cleared, with a blue and a brown container now in the HUD and the green plates falling away.

What a wave is

A wave is the pair of containers currently in the HUD. Both have three slots. Fill both and the pair is replaced by the next pair, without a cutscene or a button.

Level 1, measured

wavecontainershow it ended
1yellow, redthree yellow, then three red; both boxes vanished
2blue, brownthe plate had already started falling; the remaining blue and brown screws were the ones underneath
endnonethe board emptied and the play button stayed

The board at the start of level 1 visibly holds screws of five colours, which is the trap: a player assumes the two boxes on the HUD are a mistake. They are not. The other colours are waiting for their wave, and clicking one early parks it in a spare hole.

Level 2, measured so far

Level 2 opens with green and yellow, not with the colours level 1 ended on. Its board is a shaped figure (hexagons for shoulders, an orange square for a body, diamonds for arms) rather than three triangles, but the wave size is the same: two containers, three slots each.

Why waves matter more than the board

The board tells you where the screws are. The HUD tells you what you are allowed to do next. On both levels the HUD changed before the board was anywhere near empty, which means the useful question is not "what can I click" but "which of these colours is in a wave right now".

The order you cannot choose

We have not found a way to reorder waves, swap a container, or send a screw to a different container. The sequence appears to be fixed per level. That makes the wave order a property worth recording level by level, which is what the level pages on this site are for.
